Emma Bowman scores 22, Tigers beat 'Waska

Tigers 69, Minnewaska 43
The Tigers roared to entertain fans Monday evening at our gym. What success it was, as coach Dale Henrich's squad worked to a nice margin over the visiting Lakers of Minnewaska Area. We downed this West Central Conference rival 69-43.
The halftime score was 27-18. Momentum rolled forward in the second half as we outscored the Lakers 42-25. We got our 12th win against eight losses, while the Lakers were left at .500, 10-10. The Willmar paper said we "stormed" past Minnewaska - quite true. Fans are looking forward to the Friday home game this week, Melrose as the foe.
Emma Bowman was the big scorer in our win vs. the Lakers: 22 points. Meredith Carrington complemented that total with 15. LaRae Kram put in nine points and Malory Anderson eight. Also scoring were Kendra Wevley with six points, Kylie Swanson with four, MacKenna Kehoe with three and Shannon Dougherty with two. Bowman, Kehoe and Kram each made a three-pointer.
Anderson with her 12 rebounds led there. Carrington with her ten assists topped that department. Anderson led in steals with six. Wevley and Anderson each blocked a shot.
On to the Laker stats: Here we see Emma Thorfinnson as top scorer with 14 points. The Thorfinnsons were productive as Maddie Thorfinnson put in ten points. Then there's a dropoff. The rest of the list includes: Hannah Hoffmann (6), Isabella Ortendahl (4), Elizabeth Murken (3), Abby Randt (3), Makena Panitzke (2) and Avery Hoeper (1). Hoffmann connected twice from three-point land. I've been wondering why Ellie Danielson doesn't play hoops. She was their best volleyball player, was a standout in hitting.

Boys: Tigers 67, Monte 42
Fans at the home gym watched the MACA boys return to winning ways Tuesday night. Following a two-game stretch that challenged MACA to the utmost - games versus BOLD and West Central Area - the squad found its task most manageable on Tuesday. So the result was a win by a most comfortable margin. The opponent was Montevideo. The final score was 67-42.
We led at halftime 27-16. The victory was our ninth against seven losses. Seems like the numbers ought to be a little better than that. The real answers will come in post-season naturally. I guess we can't deduce a whole lot from Tuesday, due to the fact Monte remains winless into February. The Tigers owned a 40-26 advantage in the second half. Lots of opportunities to cheer for the orange and black faithful.
Thanks to the MACA coaching staff for posting such detailed game stats on "Maxpreps." It is hard to count on the newspaper any more, as it only comes out once a week and has essentially abandoned its website. The latter really surprises me.
Let's get into the stats from Tuesday. Here we see Jackson Loge scoring up to his standards with the team-high output of 24 points. He made eight of 17 field goal tries. Toby Gonnerman, like Loge a sophomore, scored nine points on three of six in field goals. Here are the other scorers for coach Mark Torgerson's crew: Cameron Koebernick (7), Brandon Jergenson (6), Thomas Tiernan (6), Cade Fehr (6), Jaden Maanum (5), Riley Reimers (2) and Brock Peterson (2).
Our team field goal shooting numbers were 25-for-62, 40 percent. Turning to 3's, we see sophomore Tiernan with two makes in four attempts. Loge and Koebernick each made one long-ranger, and our team numbers were four of 16, 25 percent. Loge contributed seven points from the freethrow line in ten attempts. Maanum and Gonnerman each made three freethrows. Our team stats: 13-for-17, 76 percent.
Loge came through with 13 rebounds to lead there, six offensive and seven defensive. Fehr snared six rebounds and Gonnerman had five. We had 36 total rebounds with 18 each on offense/defense. Assist leaders were Jergenson with four and Durgin Decker with three. In steals we had four Tigers each with two: Tiernan, Loge, Gonnerman and Peterson. Loge had all four of our blocked shots.
Montevideo had just five players score. That list was topped by Bradyn Schultz whose point total was 14, then we see Sam Olson with 12, Landon Stock with ten, Kaden Boike with four and Cade Weber with two. Schultz and Stock each made two 3-pointers and Boike made one. Olson and Boike were rebound leaders with eight and seven, respectively. Schultz had three assists, Weber had two steals, and Olson blocked three shots.

Specter of politics
Does not seem real pleasant to reflect on politics these days. Perhaps the only really contented ones are members of the Trump cult who march forward while showing no evidence of being able to think critically. This is no small factor in our Stevens County, part of the Seventh Congressional District where the Trump backers are so strong.
We may elect this Fischbach person to replace Collin Peterson, and it appears her main issue is being anti-abortion. Are these really the true stripes of where we live here in the rural Upper Midwest? If it's reality, I must to a certain extent step aside and accept it. Learn to work with it. I would hope to get some basic respect from the Trump crowd, but given their tendencies I won't hold my breath.
The Trump-supporting churches of Stevens County have grown to be so influential and wealthy. Those people should know that right wing politics is probably the biggest alienating factor with the young generation. Churches are getting very concerned with being able to attract the young. So maybe these people ought to relax and shake up their personal political thinking just a little: don't be mesmerized, hypnotized or captivated any more by this man called Trump. What is the matter with you all anyway?
The rich get richer. History shows that when this pattern continues too long, seeds are planted for an uprising of some sort.
Can you even stand to watch "highlights" from the flim-flam man's State of the Union speech? Can you stand Rush Limbaugh getting his special honor, this hugely polarizing figure? But then we see the No. 1 polarizer himself, Trump. The Republican Party used to stand for some modesty and humility as basic virtuous traits - restraint as an alternative to conflict. My God, what has become of us all?
Given the direction of churches, I feel our public schools should stop designating Wednesday "church night." Let's open it up for concerts and sports events.
