MACA baseball was dealt a harsh setback Tuesday evening against Fairmont. Action was in Marshall. Too bad some of the high-level spring post-season can't be in Morris or closer to here. We have come to expect appreciable trips south for both basketball and the spring diamond sports. Fewer people remember the "old days" of basketball at UMM. The current situation does not serve MACA fans well.
So Marshall it was, for the Tigers' Tuesday night commitment which was to play the boys from the extreme southern Minnesota community of Fairmont.
My coverage of the WCA and ACGC games is on my companion blog of "Morris of Course." The Saturday games were both wins. This post also reviews the MACA softball action which was in - you guessed it - Marshall. You may click to read, and thanks. - BW
Softball notes: Sydney Dietz of the Tigers is the conference Most Valuable Player for 2022. Brienna Dybdahl got Pitcher of the Year honors. Dybdahl repeats with that honor. Dietz and Dybdahl are joined in the all-conference circle by Brianna Marty, Yasmine Westerman and Cate Kehoe. Honorable Mention goes to Shannon Dougherty. The Tigers fashioned a 12-0 conference record.
Fairmont 11, Tigers 0
So it was a harsh setback Tuesday. The score of 11-0 underscores that. It was in contrast to the Saturday games in which we got complete game pitching performances from Riley Asmus and Brandon Jergenson. But on Tuesday, the winds blew differently. Maybe I should not use that figure of speech based on our weather of late.
Until recently, have we ever had a "derecho" here? I first heard the term in connection with the big Iowa storm of about three years ago. We may have been thinking: "Thank goodness that didn't happen here." We're dealing with it now, all the felled trees etc. Many people appear to be dragging feet in getting their tree damage addressed. A theory on that: insurance does not cover trees.
I had two big evergreens blown over in the front yard. I'm expecting Mr. Beyer here in a couple weeks. And now we hear of the apparent tornado that struck Forada. I'm informed that this tornado was "headed our way" for a time, before changing course. What's next?
Do you still agree with Donald Trump when he says climate change is a "hoax?" Climate change means extreme weather. And now the ground is so (expletive) wet. Trees were blown over partly because the ground was softened with moisture.
The Tigers lost Tuesday but they are not eliminated. It's a double-elimination tournament which can be confusing for the casual fans (and even media people).
Fairmont pulled away with an eight-run rally in the sixth. The pitchers battled fairly closely through five innings. Then the Cardinals began teeing off. They tacked on two more runs in the seventh.
Brett Hansen was our pitcher doing fine up through five innings. The Cardinals got to him in the sixth. MACA never got a baserunner to third vs. pitcher Eli Anderson. Anderson picked up the shutout, allowing just four hits and fanning seven. A mere one walk in his line also. Anderson was complemented by teammate Gavin Rodning who had three hits including a double.
Hansen had a hit for MACA. Durgin Decker and Sam Kleinwolterink each socked a double.
The next foe for coach Kirby Sayles' crew: Luverne. I have been finding more MACA info in the Willmar paper (its website) lately than I expected. Are we back in their coverage territory?
