Tiger Center was hopping Tuesday night with boys basketball excitement. Best of all, it was a winning brand of excitement for MACA fans. A big night as it was the season opener. No better way to inaugurate things. So the Tigers took care of business against the Wildcats of New London-Spicer.
A most satisfying score of 61-30. The Tigers were up at halftime 30-22. We overpowered the foe 31-8 in the second half. So many encouraging signs for the new season. The game was classified non-conference.
Two of our players scored in double figures. Top honors were taken by junior Riley Asmus. Riley made nine of his 14 shots for his 18 total points. Sophomore Alex Asmus complemented Riley with his 12 points on five of 12.
Three Tigers added to the mix with eight points each. Tyson Grove made three of seven to record his eight. Tyler Friesen made good on four of his seven shots en route to posting eight. And Drew Huebner sank four of ten to score eight. Ben Tiernan put in five points and Jack Kehoe two. All that adds up to 61 points, nicely reported on the "Maxpreps" site.
The Tigers put up a lot of 3-point attempts and it looks like we weren't really scintillating here: five makes. The efficiency was 21% on our 24 attempts. Grove and Alex Asmus each made two and Tiernan made one.
Oh my there was a lid on the basket for our freethrow tries. We were zip for 6. Any deficiencies are easily disregarded when you look at the game's outcome. Tiger Center was a happy place.
The Tigers collected 32 rebounds of which 14 were offensive. Top individual was Huebner with eight, of which three were offensive. Riley Asmus and Kehoe each collected six rebounds.
And Huebner topped the list in assists with four. Riley Asmus and Kehoe each had three assists. On to steals: here we see Alex Asmus account for four of the team total 16. Grove and Riley Asmus each had three. Alex Asmus blocked a shot.
Just one NL-Spicer player reached double figures in points: Brayden Skindelien with ten. The rest of the list: Gavin Vick 7, Griffin Thompson 5, Zachary Lageson 3, Kaden Toutges 3 and Beckett Newman 2. Skindelien made two 3-point shots while Thompson and Vick each nailed one.
Toutges with his eleven rebounds led there. Lageson and Vick each had two assists. Taylor Daucsavage, Cole Laughlin and Toutges each had a steal.
I am impressed to find so much game info available to peruse on this morning after. Even the West Central Tribune came through this time. Hope to see more of that. So much better than to see "stats not available" for MACA.
Girls: Tigers 56, Paynesville 41
Paynesville was the site for girls hoops play involving our Tigers Tuesday night. The Tigers won for the second straight time so we're 2-1 now. The score Tuesday was 56-41 over the green-clad Bulldogs. Unfortunately we see "stats not available" for MACA on the WC Tribune site. So I cannot share who our scoring leader was.
I know that we led by just two at halftime. So as with the boys we turned on the jets in second half play. The second half was a 32-19 scoring story. It looks like lots of excitement lies ahead for Tiger hoops this winter. It sure feels like winter on this Wednesday morning. The temperature may have inched up some but there is a wind out of Hades.
This game like the boys' fell under non-conference.
Aw shoot, I'll have to settle for reporting the Paynesville stat highlights. So we see Grace Roberg and Rayna Spanier leading the green team with 15 and 13 points respectively. Alivia Schaefer scored seven, Kylie Pauls four and Gabby Miller two. Spanier and Roberg each made a 3-pointer. Roberg led in rebounds with eight followed by Spanier with six. Roberg stole the ball five times.
A question:
When will the Stevens County Times newspaper report on the Tuesday hoops
success for MACA? Will we have to wait until next Tuesday? That's what I
suspect. That is too long to wait IMHO. The Stevens County Times has a website all set up for sports reporting. They just have to start utilizing it instead of giving us all that duplicative UMM coverage. It's duplicative because it all appears in a timely way on UMM's own website. I don't understand this.
Do people inquire with the SCT about this? What answer do they get? The SCT sportswriter should be champing at the bit to get his work out there. I sure would be. We have lived with the current norm for so long. And you know how it can be in small towns: we accept the norms too much.
Looks like the Gophers of women's hoops are causing lots of reason for excitement too. How about ten wins in a row? That's all ten games on their slate so far this season.
So you'd think we might be in national rankings. A friend tells me this morning that's not the case. What will it take? Well a win in our next game vs. Nebraska would sure help.
So impressive have the Gophers been, I think they can give the fabled Iowa women's program a run for their money! Can't wait until these two teams meet up. The Hawkeyes have won lately even without the injured Lucy Olsen. Lucy had a freak non-game injury.
The Gophers have yet to play a conference game. They got win No. 10 on Tuesday. It was over the "Ospreys" (neat name) of North Florida. You might know that the "osprey" is a raptor. The Gophers won 90-44, yes a blow-out. The Tuesday success was at home.
Get familiar with some of these names. Like Grace Grocholski who led us with 15 points. Annika Stewart put in 15 off the bench. Sophie Haart scored 12.
