Weather holds off for MACA girls game

The MACA girls hosted Minnewaska Thursday night before the new onslaught of bad weather. I'm looking out my window facing north right now, 7:50 a.m. Most inhospitable conditions, the classic roaring northwest wind. You live on Northridge Drive and you really get appreciation of the northwest wind. You really have to respect it. The earliest settlers out here were shocked at how strong the winds could be.
MACA team member Addie Cihak lives in the neighborhood. So does tennis coach Britney House. For some reason our neighborhood wasn't real fired up about Christmas lights this year. I wonder if everyone's spirits were being worn down by the daily headlines. And right now we have ICE as the focus. And the protests against it.
ICE is the Federal police, a law enforcement dimension we really are not used to. We think of state and local in connection to law enforcement. And even that can get overbearing sometimes. You been annoyed by a seat belt ticket that seemed trivial? Well you don't want Federal police to come after you or to even notice you.
Minnesota is in the crosshairs. You aren't Pollyannish, are you? Surely you should realize that a big reason for this is that our governor was on the national ticket that ran against the current president. Will we even have elections again? And if we do, will they be legitimate or will Republicans "cook" things? Look what happened in 2021 when the Trump supporters attempted to storm the nation's capitol.
And for what? Pure unadulterated power?
And now we may see the insurrection act used against our state. And we're getting no help or sympathy from our congressperson out here in western Minnesota? Michelle Fischbach? Fischbach is oriented in quite the opposite way, putting her loyalty to the Orange Man ahead of her devotion to Minnesota. We voted for this.

Minnewaska 56, Tigers 46
Well, the weather held off for the MACA Tigers to play a potent Minnewaska Area team Thursday night. Fans observed at our Tiger Center. The outcome could be deemed encouraging, even though it was a loss. You probably are aware that the Lakers are a power. They took fourth in state last year. And at present they are getting votes in AA. They have some familiar names back from last year.
The Tigers trailed by eight at halftime. In the end it was a ten-point deficit. 'Waska won this game 56-46.
Oh shoot, the West Central Tribune has "stats not available" for MACA. Is this ever going to end? Is anyone trying to give the Willmar paper a hard time over this? Would a pressure campaign work? How sad that the stats are "not available" to the WC Trib.
The WC Trib would nomally be my best hope. I cannot find the MACA details anywhere else. Well, I do have the 'Waska details. And I'm prefectly happy to write about those Lakers. I have family connections to Glenwood. The Lakers outscored the Tigers 27-25 in the second half.
Lauryn Ankeny topped 'Waska's scoring with 15 points. Alia Randt was right behind with 13. Four other Lakers scored: Berlynn Green 9, Nori Song 7, Kendall Danielson 6 and Olivia Danielson 6.
'Waska showed sharpness in long-range shooting as three players each made two 3's: These were Randt, Green and Kendall Danielson. Song made one 3-pointer.
Green led in rebounds with ten followed by Randt with eight and KendallDanielson with seven. Green and Song each had two assists. Randt paced the steals category with four. Olivia Danielson blocked two shots.

UMM women fall in OT
I'm pleased to say I was in attendance for the UMM women's hoops affair Wednesday at the P.E. Center. UMM hoops is fine entertainment in this bleak weather time of year, n'est-ce pas? All that was missing was a UMM victory but we came oh so close.
The score was tied at the end of regulation. So the overtime was played in which the visiting Rams of North Central outscored the Cougars 18-12. The Cougars fell in the 88-82 final. We had a great start as we outscored the Rams 19-11 in the first quarter.
A win would have gotten us pointed in the right direction. Alas, as it stands we're 4-11 overall, 1-1 in the UMAC.
Claire Stark
The Cougars sure showed good scoring balance. Our four double figures scorers were led by Claire Stark with 20 points. Grace Perry scored 17, Maddy Grove 14 and Gianna Klarenbeek 11. Shelby Mortenson and Brooke Ver Steeg each contributed eight points and Anna Myers four.
We were 6 of 16 in 3-point shooting with Perry standing out with her four makes. Klarenbeek added two 3's to the mix. Perry was team-high in rebounds with ten. Ver Steeg dished out five assists.
My own little fan's bias: let Klarenbeek shoot more! She brings the Iowa magic to our women's basketball.
I had my usual Snickers bar ($2) as a snack during the entertainment. Check out the schedule y'all and consider attending.
There's a big college sports gambling scandal in the news. I fully expected this with the proliferation of sports gambling. When I was a kid, any kind of gambling was considered immoral.

Class AA power survives an A challenge

My Bonanza Valley newspaper friend Randy Olson can't celebrate this one: the Tuesday night girls basketball game between his BBE Jaguars and Minnewaska Area Lakers. It was a defeat for BBE and another win for our friends to the east Minnewaska Area.
'Waska often wins in a rout but this was not another of those games. The game had a competitive look and ended in a score of 72-61. No surprise that BBE put up a strong challenge - those Jaguars entered with a five-game win skein. Both teams are getting attention in the state ranking system. Note that they are in different divisions, 'Waska in AA and BBE in A.
The Lakers own an 11-2 record as we head into the second half of January. BBE is likewise flying high at 10-3, so Randy has plenty of opportunities to write upbeat articles. The Jags led at halftime Tuesday, score of 30-28. The Lakers had the second half scoring edge, 44-31.
Lauren Ankeny led the scoring charge for 'Waska with 16 points. She made two 3-pointers. Alia Randt was No. 2 with an output of 13 and this Laker made three 3-pointers. Berlynn Green broke into double figures also with 12 points. Then we see Kendall Danielson 9, Nori Song 8, Olivia Danielson 8 and Allie Mrnak 6.
Kendall Danielson like Randt connected for three 3-pointers. Ankeny and Mrnak each made two 3's.
The Danielson girls led in attacking the boards, Kendall and Olivia both with five rebounds. Randt topped assists with three. She also led in steals with five. Ankeny blocked two shots and was complemented by Randt, Green and Olivia Danielson each with one.
Kacey Fischer of BBE
Randy can report that Kacey Fischer of his Jags was an offensive force with 23 points. Teagan Dingmann scored 15, Mya Worms 13 and Macey Roering 10. Dingmann had the only 3-pointer. Fischer topped rebounds with 12.
Click on link below to read my summary of the 'Waska girls' 68-42 win over West Central Area, and the boys' 51-40 win over WCA. This post is on my companion Blog "Morris of Course." Thanks for reading.

U of M women impress
A huge game is set for the Gophers of women's basketball tonight (Wednesday). There is basis for optimism. Our Gophers are coming off a win over #23-ranked USC. The test tonight would appear more formidable based on rankings. "Coach Dawn" will have her team taking the court to play the third-ranked UCLA Bruins. Game-time is 7 p.m. and it'll be at our home court.
Me? I'll be taking in the home women's basketball action for our UMM Cougars, 5:30 p.m. Looks like it's a women's/men's doubleheader at the P.E. Center.
Grace Grocholski
The Gophers had to escape a hole to defeat the Trojans of USC on Sunday. That hole was to the tune of 13 points. "Coach Dawn" got her team fired up and apparently made a few adjustments, much to the delight of our home crowd.
Our big star was Grace Grocholski with 25 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Sophie Hart was another cog and this was with 15 points, six rebounds and two steals. Mara Braun's contributions: six points, ten rebounds and two blocked shots.

Troubling times for our state
A top headline from the "Mediaite" site: "Trump warns 'the day of reckoning and retribution is coming in Minnesota.' "
What right does Donald Trump have to threaten our wonderful state of Minnesota like this? We are proud of the life we have here. Our standard of living is impressive. Would we want to trade with a red state like Alabama or Mississippi? Well of course not. Being a blue state has evidently gotten us far.
But Trump appears ready to use the power of his lofty office to knock us down. The "Mediaite" article began "President Donald Trump erupted at the people of Minnesota in a truly unhinged Truth Social post on Tuesday morning."
You would think that our congressperson out here in western Minnesota would be outraged that Trump would threaten our state this way. But of course I would never look for that, as I would expect the exact opposite. So sure enough, her most recent email release simply states that she "supports law enforcement."
That statement is fine as far as it goes, but the current question revolves around FEDERAL law enforcement. That's a different animal from what we are used to living with, which is state and local law enforcement. When we think of law enforcement, we think of state and local. We think of the state patrol and our county sheriff's department, those guys in uniform who come to the Willie's deli in the morning. In big cities it's the donut shops.
Federal law enforcement is really a very scary specter. It can supersede everything. The public will have to rise up en masse to try to stop it, to stop this equivalent of the Gestapo of Nazi Germany. We have in fact seen an uprising. We've seen protest efforts right here in Morris. We need more than just the "Indivisible" people joining in. We need a whole lot of patriots.
We cannot count on our local churches at all, certainly not the "conservative" churches. The conservative ones if anything are on the other side. If you have any MAGA family members, it is time to CUT THEM OFF. Do not humor them anymore. It is time to disown these people.
Jesus Christ
Attention ministers: it is time to stop being scared of quoting Jesus from his Sermon on the Mount. Yes Jesus could sound a little "liberal" at times. So what? Be proud of what Jesus Christ stood for. And if certain Trump supporters in your congregation want to stand up and walk out, SO BE IT! Let them go.
Oh, I suppose you need their money. Well then what is your true god?
The Catholic Church has been hanging in there so far.
Maybe Michalle Fischbach actually wants us to be like Alabama or Mississippi.

Amid UMM angst, women's hoops wins

I assume that classes are resuming for the new semester at UMM this week. The place is turning a page with a new chancellor in the driver's seat. What is that going to mean? Any drastic changes to be announced soon? We should probably welcome that. We don't need another bombshell expose like what our friends at the Star Tribune did.
And yes they are our friends. They can point the way when special interests or self-serving groups get in the way. Did UMM lose its way? I suppose the new guy is going to try to get the needed background. Wow! To see a headline proclaiming a "nosedive" in enrollment! Well, something is off.
We can count on UMM sports as a constant. Come rain or shine, the Cougars will entertain us. And yes I'd like to see UMM sports somehow elevated to playing in the Northern Sun Conference again. More prestige and legitimacy. Well-informed people tell me it can't happen. So I'm just stuck here dreaming.
So maybe I'm dreaming of the day when the bleachers can be pulled out on both sides of the P.E. Center. That's what it was made for. One thing is for sure: the UMM facilities would befit the Northern Sun Conference just fine.
I can probably rule out my dream of an inflatable cover for Big Cat Field. But just dream about that: softball games under perfect conditions starting right after basketball is over! It is fun to dream. The rapidly-fading St. Cloud State has the model inflatable cover. It would have to be considered a major asset there.
St. Cloud State does not even have a football program anymore. Isn't that mind-blowing? You'd think SCSU could at least field a team in the UMAC. A bunch of buildings are set to be torn down there. I believe they are waiting for state money to do that. Too bad the state has lost so much through "fraud." But with all the rampant fraud (apparently), isn't it interesting how Minnesota still has the reputation of being such a prosperous and happy state?
Would we trade with Alabama or Mississippi? And yet we have a governor who the president calls a "retard."
It is hard to monitor how UMM is really doing with student numbers. I'm aching to know how the second semester is going to stack up. It may be nearly impossible to find out. Graduation in the spring will provide a decent barometer. Remember all the years when we could count on a top-flight band and choir to perform featured numbers at graduation? A lot of us took it for granted.
I also took for granted a nice graduation program to be handed to me: something to be kept as a souvenir. Then the day came when I was told "use your smartphone." Well, I have lagged behind and I don't have one.
I will keep an eye on the Cougar basketball calendar to consider attending some more home games. UMM has very obscure opponents these days. I almost hate to research the background of some of those schools online. "Strange" might describe. "Martin Luther College" of the Wisconsin Synod of the Lutheran Church: the synod that believes the Pope to be the antichrist.
In the non-conference schedule, Oak Hills Christian, considered the most anti-gay college in the U.S. Mark Fohl told me at the time UMM joined the UMAC that "if we just stick to sports, we'll be fine." In other words, ignore some of the odd details of some of our opponents.
Kind of an "island of misfit toys."
Things were different in our Northern Sun Conference days.
One thing I greatly admire now: a code of conduct for UMM fans. We could have used that in a previous era. UMM students used to consider themselves so superior. Had a lot to do with "academics." I hate that word. I think the UMM students of today are totally classy and honorable.

Gianna Klarenbeek
Winning at New Ulm
Now let's look at basketball: the UMM women impressed with a win by five points last Wednesday. The success was over Martin Luther at New Ulm. Overtime ended with the Cougars on top 80-75. The game was the conference opener. It was entertaining to watch as the lead changed hands often.
The Cougars are still well below .500 overall. We'll see if that situation improves. The Knights of Martin Luther are a .500 team.
Gianna Klarenbeek who comes to UMM from Iowa really impressed offensively: 26 points. It was bombs away from three-point range as she got in the zone for six makes. Claire Stark put in 14 points and Maddy Grove 12.

Iowa magic
Klarenbeek's hometown is Inwood, Iowa, and she went to school at West Lyon. Iowa of course has been spectacular in the development of women's basketball. This year's U of Iowa team is good but will probably not have a waltz in the post-season. The Hawkeyes had to come from quite far behind to defeat Indiana yesterday (Sunday). I was able to watch the game live on my laptop.
The U of M Gophers will have a shot at beating Iowa most definitely. Go Gophers and go "coach Dawn." I mostly try to avoid the coach's last name which I find is hard to handle. Go coach Dawn! Hopefully the Gophers can make the NCAAs this season. Last year they looked like a cinch for getting in but then faded just enough down the closing stretch to have the door closed on them.
Oh, the Gophers had a highly impressive win yesterday by getting past #23 USC! Always a plum for the U to defeat those Trojans in any sport! Way to go, coach Dawn! Keep up the mo, Gophers!

Heading of the morning on YouTube: "Baby boomers are ready to die - they don't want any part of this fake AI world."

MACA boys "could have scored a hundred"

Nothing could have stopped the MACA boys basketball team Thursday night. Not even an ICE agent. Suppose I should not make light of the incident from Gotham i.e. the Twin Cities. Everyone is now following their script, so if you're MAGA you will bend over backwards to defend the murderer wearing the ICE gear and uniform.
We are steadily entering 1930s Germany with all that is happening around us. The boiling frog principle explains why we are not properly scared or astonished. A mother of three killed as she was trying to slowly pull away from the scene. Doesn't that shock or concern you? Not if you consume media like the Jay Thomas show on WDAY out of Fargo.
I turned in yesterday to see if Thomas might depart from his usual MAGA-influenced script. Maybe tone it down some or at least observe that maybe the ICE person got overly consumed with adrenaline or whatever. A mother of three? Shot and killed? And the power of Trump and MAGA is so over-arching, you simply cannot demur some from the "conservative talk" crowd? Can't think for yourself?
Jay Thomas was hugely disappointing. There is nothing that yours truly can do but observe. I'm forced to live in 1930s Germany myself. How did Germany look by late 1945?

Tigers 91, BOLD 35
My, what a winning romp by our MACA boys basketball team! "We could have scored a hundred," I heard Neal Hofland say at Detoy's Restaurant this morning. We were a steam roller.
I am profoundly happy this morning, if I can take my mind off the ICE incident/tragedy, to report game details. My resource is obviously not the West Central Tribune website which stiffs us. Thanks to "Maxpreps" I can report that we charged out to a 58-20 halftime lead.
BOLD has a distraction these days: the "criminal investigation" into school finances. We can sure feel thankful we don't deal with that in our Motown. Everything is coming up roses here with referendums always getting passed. Of course the last one passed only narrowly. But it passed, which surely causes some jealousy in the Minnewaska school district.
Four Tigers scored in double figures in Thursday's rout. The charge was led by senior Tyson Grove who put in 23 points on 9 of 16 shooting. Alex Asmus was second-high with his 18 points on 7 of 12. Jonah Huebner's total was 11 and he was an efficient five of six. Jack Kehoe rounds out the top four and his ten points came on a perfect five of five!
Riley Asmus put in eight points on three of five. Ben Tiernan added to the mix with seven points on three of eight. Also scoring: Bryce Hardy 6, Tanner Friesen 4, Jorge Rodriguez 2 and Ozzy Jerome 2.
Grove led in 3's with five makes among 11 attempts. Bryce Hardy was 2 for 2 in long-rangers. Tiernan and Alex Asmus each made a '3'. In all the Tigers were 9 of 24 from beyond the 3-point line. In freethrows we shot 6 of 15.
Rebounds! We had 41 total with 15 on the offensive boards. The Asmus boys led the rebounding effort, Riley with nine and Alex with eight.
Riley Asmus was our top assist producer with six. Three of his mates each recorded three: Tiernan, Alex Asmus and Huebner. Grove and Huebner played an aggressive brand of ball that rewarded them with six steals each. Kehoe blocked two shots.

The dismal news
On this Friday a.m. we're dealing with more of the Trump-inspired news that serves to divide us with each passing day. Some people cannot see what is right in front of them.
People who are so quick to blame the mom that got shot and killed were certainly not oriented in such a way when Ashli Babbitt was shot by police in the J-6 riots. Oh what a tangled web we weave. And you just know what the Megyn Kellys of the world are going to say. Right along with Jay Thomas, the jerk.
Right now Thomas is a "hot" media personality. But the political winds can shift and change, Jay. I mean, when people start getting shot and killed. People are going to start getting tired of you and your preachy predictability. Your scripted "outrage." We can tune in to Mark Levin for that.
I see a headline this morning where the Wall Street Journal, once a conservative fountain, advises restraint with a lot of what is going on from Washington D.C. In other words "cool it some," a message for the Trump crowd. The headline cites the Journal's editorial board. The board says "violent episodes like ICE shooting won't help Trump, GOP in November."
Right on, WSJ, you know your priorities, the top one being to take care of the electoral prospects of the Republican Party. Well I'm sitting here as a mere soul at his kitchen table in Flyoverland, and I'll proclaim that the over-arching concern isn't a political party, it's the needless loss of life of the mom of three. I hope the Timberwolves call off a home game.
I hope the Democrats can get so much power now, they can absolutely screw the red states just like Trump is now screwing the blue states (like Minnesota).
What are the "Christian" preachers going to say this Sunday? I mean from the rigidly conservative pulpits where there is no such thing as nuance? This mom of 3 "had it coming?" This is what God ordains? Well he's not my God, that's for sure. Jesus Christ? The guy  with the long hair who wears a dress and hears voices? Does he endorse ICE and its tactics too? Just because Trump was "sent by God?"
The true God will send us the truly meritorious message at some point. And it won't be the kind of message you'll hear from Jay Thomas or Megyn Kelly. It will be about love and compassion.
That's my take and I realize I win no popularity contests out here. I could get death threats. I'm a stone's throw from the conservative Good Shepherd Church.

Addendum: If I had not found such thorough info on "Maxpreps" this morning, I would have blogged about the Minnewaska boys and girls teams from their Thursday games. I love blogging about the Lakers. However, my preference is always to blog about our MACA Tigers here in Morris. Timely info is sometimes impossible to come by.

Basketball springs into '26 with wins

Normal life is with us again, as we get in the flow post-holidays. It is a relief for yours truly. And our eyes turn to the regular basketball schedule again. Is there anything more effective for getting us through the "blahs" of winter? It is a relief to see MACA game results from Tuesday night. "Bring it on" for the rest of the season.
And if Tuesday was an indication, we can surely expect exciting highlights. Because, the Tigers of both genders enjoyed winning outcomes. I just checked "Maxpreps" at 10:15 a.m. and do not see the boys data reported. We'll keep an eye on that site.
"Minnesota Scores" of course has the game scores. Alas, in the past I could rely on two resources that now are very unreliable. One is the West Central Tribune of Willmar. For years, despite its occasional flaws and inconsistencies, which any paper is bound to have, it was very helpful. Today it is spotty at best.
The other lost resource is the kmrs-kkok website. Since Brett Miller left, it really just has the bare essentials of scores and maybe the "next up" announcing the next game.
I have hardly typed any of the girls' players' names yet this season. Maybe once. And I theorize that happened because an opposing coach was nice enough to supply the info to the WC Tribune.
Our MACA girls won in convincing fashion Tuesday night. This was over Lac qui Parle. Score of 69-31. Game site was Madison. For this game the West Central Trib does not have the LQPV data either. Their coverage is two sentences. The second sentence announces when LQPV's next game is. The article does not announce the Tigers' next game.
How inconsiderate. The omission seems rather offensive. The WC Trib is owned by Forum Communications. The Forum once owned the newspaper in Morris. But they left town.

Boys ranked #2 in MN
Let's take a look at the boys game outcome. Here the orange and black won impressively also. Look at the score of 74-49. Our boys shot out to a 39-18 lead at halftime. Fans at Minnewaska observed this hoops action.
Our MACA boys are ranked No. 2 in state AA! Lots of highlights lie ahead for sure.
So the WC Trib stiffs us as far as game/player data. They do report on the Minnewaska Area Lakers, our friendly neighbor to the east on beautiful Lake Minnewaska. We have to feel for them because they have great difficulty getting a referendum to pass. We here in Morris perform substantially better on that, although our last one passed only narrowly. But it passed!
Does this mean that I root for school referendums? Well no, not at all. My main issue is that I have a strong dislike for teacher unions. It is a lifelong passionate hatred. So if  a referendum looks good for the teachers in any way, shape or form, I am thumbs-down. I support the destruction of teacher unions. I am not alone. If you want to see fewer cuts to school programs, you'll be with me on this.
A big problem is that a lot of people feel obligated to form personal friendships with teachers. I have seen this a lot in my life. Teachers have the power to intimidate us.
I enjoy reporting on the activities so I will share here the Minnewaska highlights from Tuesday's action. To repeat: The WC Trib reports details on the Lakers, not on the Tigers. I cannot influence this at all.
The name "Danielson" is pretty high-profile in 'Waska athletics these days, boys and girls. So we see Luke Danielson at the fore of the Lakers' scoring with 17 points. Two of his teammates each scored ten: Marc Gruber and Cavin Thorfinnson. Caleb Kath and Riley Week each put in four points. Tristan O'Neil and Connor Erickson each added two.
Gruber and Thorfinnson each made two 3-pointers. Danielson with his eleven rebounds led there. Thorfinnson had five assists to lead. He and Erickson each had a steal. Week and Alan Svec each blocked a shot.
This is not how I wanted to present today's blog post. I wish I had detailed information on either the MACA boys or girls team, preferably both. But when you get handed lemons, you try to make lemonade.

What's with the "fog" outside?

(image from Flickr)
Looks like fog outside but not sure how this can be. Isn't it too cold? Well my meteorological grasp is limited. We are certainly in the depths of winter.
I have experienced Minnesota winter all my life. Ought to be very few surprises. And of course I have experienced countless Christmases. And New Year's. Ought to be few surprises. My spirits really got dragged down during this past holiday season. Or maybe I could use a trendy word, say "iteration of a holiday season."
Funny how such formerly obscure words can pop up in our writing and speaking. Like "kerfuffle." It's been tucked away in the dictionary for a long time.
Christmas is for young families with children. I'm an old person with no family. Should not feel surprised by the adjustment one must make for the holidays. Younger people should know that older people like their routines. It does not mean that we "acquiesce to boredom." We don't look at it that way. And don't feel sorry for us, we can be quite content.

Effect of holidays
I woke up this morning having to think twice about what day of the week it is. You see, we're coming off the New Year's holiday. A week earlier it was Christmas. First it's Christmas Eve Day, then Christmas itself.
A "meme" is growing that money spent on Christmas gifts is largely wasted. People get gifts that they do not need or want. I found it depressing to tune in to the radio on the day after Christmas and listen to guidance on how to make all your "returns" at the stores. Do we really need to go through this?
(I have now used two more words that were formerly obscure: "acquiesce" and "meme.")

Vibes from Fargo radio

I listen to Fargo radio - you have WDAY for the Republicans/conservatives and KFGO for those people who are striving to "hang in there" on the other side. So we listen to Joel Heitkamp. I actually find it more instructive to listen to Jay Thomas on WDAY because I always want to know what conservatives are thinking.
And make no mistake: in philosophical terms conservatives have a lot to offer. The problem now is that they have become so wild-eyed, somewhat maniacal really. Maybe that's because their political views are tied so much to their churchgoing.
Middle ground is not an option for them. They are so determined to "take down" our governor Tim Walz - because he ran on the ticket opposing their God and hero - they are now willing to risk the loss of considerable Federal benefits for our state.
Real people are going to be impacted negatively by this. Just like real people are going to be hurt because of the cuts to ACA health insurance. My critics would say I should use the term "Obamacare." They would like how that would stigmatize me as a political partisan. Like my critics are not themselves boldly stigmatized.
I typically wake up in middle of night, throw on a sweater and sweatpants, maybe open laptop or listen to radio for an hour or two.  Radio set for Fargo. And so last night there's this "Red Eye" program on the conservative WDAY that was a caricature of the standard conservative programming you'll find in the electronic media. Funny how the electronic media has become such a fortress for the flat-Earth folks.
And so the "Red Eye" host went to town lionizing people with the "R" next to their name. On this night it was J.D. Vance in particular getting his raves. And then going into a commercial break the host said he'd return with an assessment of some Democrats who he characterized as being mediocre. You know the descriptive words, the patronizing.
So many people must eat this stuff up. They must tune in day after day. We have conservatives from heaven-knows-where infiltrating Minnesota to try to take down Gov. Walz with every imaginable brickbat. And certainly it should concern Minnesotans that the "collateral" damage here is the many innocent people who would have benefited from programs that get Federal money.
Oh we're not alone. Just in the last few days, Colorado and Florida have borne the brunt too. Colorado and Florida have had the rug pulled out from under them because of petty political issues. Colorado allows mail-in voting. It also refuses to let Tina Peters out of prison, even though the president issued a nominal "pardon" of her. In Florida I guess the issue is an Indian tribe - Osceola? - that had the nerve to complain about the president's immigration crackdown. The Natives voiced disapproval of the "Alligator Alcatraz."
Obviously there are aspects of 1930s Germany entering our lives in America more each day. And we are like the "boiling frog" in terms of our awareness. Me? There is nothing I can do about it. Colorado and Florida are now hurt by the petty political stuff. But you will not hear the "Red Eye" radio host speak on it. There's a good chance the host knows better in his own mind. But he knows he gets his "ratings" from being able to reach all the flat-Earth folks.
In Minnesota we are definitely going to feel the sting of losing Federal $ for certain programs. I really thought the Republicans would "blink" before they would allow so many people to lose their ACA subsidies. People will forgo medical care.
Maybe the Republicans would want to echo Ebenezer Scrooge when he talked about "decreasing the surplus population." Remember that from the Dickens book? Should we really think in terms of the "surplus population" being superfluous as it were? Easier to let them die? Well, when Iowa's Joni Ernst was warned about people dying because of the end of ACA subsidies, her now-famous response was "well, we all die."
Yes and we can reduce the world's surplus population. Meanwhile we see reports that Elon Musk is close to becoming the world's first "trillionaire." Do you know how much a trillion is?
Incidentally, the real point of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" is not that people should wake up with a friendlier attitude toward others. No, the main point was about financial redistribution! The people who have a lot can give up some for the betterment of others.
Now you can call me a "lefty" or a "Trump hater" or you can say I have "TDS." The conservatives are going to thump their chest, I'm sure, over revealing some alleged "fraud" even though these discoveries should be made through a proper investigation by duly constituted authorities. Fraud is a crime. There could be convictions.
No, I guess "suspicions" and emotions are enough in our current climate. And many Minnesotans are now set to be badly impacted.
I wouldn't rule out DJT using Federal military assets to go out to Colorado and get Tina Peters out of prison. So many local churchgoers are just going to keep cheering him. I can only observe.

BTW:
Why does fog happen in winter?

Warm, moist air flows into a cooler area. Since cold air can hold less water vapor than warm air, the water vapor condenses and forms fog.

Holidays impose malaise for some of us

I have gone from feeling less of the holiday spirit to actually resenting the holidays. The holidays automatically have challenges for people who live alone and have little or no family. And there are more of us than you might think.
Simply having your routine disrupted can have health risks. Very similar to the reported risks that come with the change from DST to standard time or vice versa. People can have heart attacks.
So last week a favored restaurant of mine in Morris was closed three days. Twice for Christmas and once for the Dean Monson funeral. I liked Dean but I didn't think life had to come to a halt totally for his funeral. Of course many of us have to make adjustments to such disruptions. For sure there would be no business closed if I died.
I liked Dean even though he was quite zealous on political matters in a way contrary to me.
I awaken this morning on New Year's Eve Day and see another picture of Donald Trump at the top of Yahoo! News. Well of course, what did you expect? We in Stevens County appear to be investing all our hopes and dreams in this person. But look at his totally tasteless and disrespectful way of talking about so many things/people. It comes at us almost daily. We appear blind to it here in Stevens County.

Here we go again
I wonder if the restaurant of which I speak is open on New Year's Eve Day or New Year's Day. I could understand the latter, not really the former. Don's Cafe was open on Christmas Eve Day, did a rather brisk business it appeared. People need to eat. Casey's opens at 10 a.m. on Christmas Day and it can be a refuge.
I have a background of dealing with diabetes. However, in my last two visits to the doc I have been told I am "pre-diabetes." I take this as good news. I bring this up because it's justification for having my refrigerator and freezer disconnected in my house. So I eliminate a lot of food temptations. But it also means I cannot store food away in those places to deal with holidays.
If DeToy's here in town is a barometer, things will be getting worse and worse with hospitality establishments choosing to be closed for, well, for any excuse that might be cited. Will it spread to MLK Day? I have to laugh: in our current political climate with DJT at the top, could you imagine MLK Day having a snowball's chance in hell of getting approved? I don't like it partly because it comes along so soon after the long semester break at our UMN-Morris. UMM ought to be getting more lively at that time, rather than shutting down on Monday.
We must be legally obligated to roll over for that holiday. Apparently a lot of people agree with my skepticism. Because, there has been a move to make the day more than about remembering MLK. It is now "Martin Luther King Day of Service." It can be commended in that regard.
But I would prefer that it not exist at all. It celebrates the life of a man who made a crusade out of getting basic rights for a class of people who should have had those rights all along. It's a depressing reminder of our past, and getting close to home it's like how our UMM recognizes the past injustices toward Native Americans.
To study history is to study how the strong have exploited the weak. What matters is how we move forward with appropriate actions and policies. Today's young people had nothing to do with injustices toward black people or Native Americans.
It seems naive now to even break down the population as "white" and "black." Because, we are a rainbow culture and we should simply judge people as people. And I think the young people do. The Supreme Court has gone all the way to striking down "affirmative action." So I'm not sure how UMM's Native policy can continue. A "treaty" would insulate it. But I don't think it's based on a literal treaty. And the Natives are allowed to go to school here without paying tuition.
And you have to be one-fourth Native? Can we be sure these calculations are credible/accurate?
Morris area people would like to know how UMM will do with "retention" of students from one semester into the next. Can we count on getting accurate figures? There are people in authority who have a vested interest in such figures, obviously.
Is Minnesota really allowing "fraud" to run rampant? Of course fraud is an unacceptable thing.

Seeking relief
I sure hope the holiday slump or malaise is over after tomorrow (Thursday). Yes for me it is a malaise. I have to work at keeping my spirits up. We don't even know the date on which Christ was born. So what gives? "Christmas" grew out of a pagan holiday. After several years of suffering Trump, paganism is starting to look more appealing to me. The Christian faith in America was responsible for getting Trump elected twice. It would not have happened without all the "evangelicals."
So maybe I should just damn the Christian faith.
We will miss Dean
Dean Monson was a huge flag-waver for the Republicans. Our congressperson Michelle Fischbach could not be a more reverential DJT supporter. However, I don't think she has mentioned him by name in her last several email releases. I got on her list because of a question I tried asking her once. It is no use trying to communicate with her. She looks up to the Orange Man as if he is Christ himself.

"Ticking time bomb"
I fear America has been in decline ever since the "2008 financial crisis." All we did was paper over the crisis. There has been a ticking time bomb since. Remember the days when a senior citizen like me could go into a bank and get a CD that paid decent interest? It was so routine. The bank employees would even say "thank you" as they were agreeing to pay you a substantial amount of $. Bygone times.
DJT is trying to run roughshod over the Federal Reserve now. The president is not even supposed to comment about the Federal Reserve.
Thank God the holidays are almost over. If Congress has not impeached Trump by now, it will never happen. We can't fight Mike Johnson who represents a state of the old Confederacy. Those people have not let go. And now we in Minnesota are supposed to shout "retard!" at our governor!
Forgive them, Lord, for they know not what they do.
God is more charitable than I am.
