Tigers welcome T-giving with 58-43 win

Good morning on this day before Thanksgiving 2024. I view tomorrow with some concern as I won't be able to have breakfast at Caribou Coffee. Caribou is a nice "refuge" for when most businesses are closed for the holiday. Not that it's the only time I go there. It's quite agreeable. At present it does not accommodate me because their oven is down. They have a sign saying their oven is "on vacation." Funny.
Caribou has had its share of problems like this over time. What will I do on Thanksgiving morning to get sustenance? I can get coffee at Caribou but then I need something more. Shouldn't have a cookie because I am diabetic. Maybe the deli will have some regular cold sandwiches. That'll get me by for the day.
The problem with Casey's is that you cannot sit down there.
Holidays tend to be depressing for people who live alone. You understand now? I have no family. That's what I had to tell my doc recently. He made a reference to "your family" and I clarified that I had none.
Perhaps a cold ham spread sandwich will be my way of saying "thanks" for Thanksgiving.

Tigers 58, Litchfield 43
As for our MACA prep athletes, let's take a look at what happened Tuesday night. Hey this is noteworthy: an impressive win for the MACA girls basketball team. This would be the first win for new head coach Justin Daly. So congratulations to Justin.
I remember working with Justin's father Paul when Paul coached the Chokio-Alberta boys. Agreeable person to work with. Always happy to talk about his Spartans. Now it's the "next generation." I basically do not know these people. That's how it goes.
I left the Morris newspaper in 2006 - doesn't seem that long ago in my mind but it certainly was a long time ago. Today's seniors were mostly not born yet! How am I holding up? Well like I said I have diabetes but I don't feel any symptoms of it. I insist on eating some real food now and then regardless of all the advice. I refuse to just drink coconut oil all day. We all end up dying.
I do not snack between meals. The refrigerator and freezer in my home are not even connected.
I am back to taking the full dosage of Metformin which means I can only eat two meals a day, or really just 1 1/2. To keep going I drink two bottles of "Glucerna" nutritional supplement each day. Once a week I'll break the rules just to get some extra calories.
Life can be a b---h but as I sit here right now I feel good, 100 percent actually. Thank the Lord for each day we have like that.

Very happy to see that the West Central Tribune website this morning has details from the MACA girls' win over Litchfield. Glory hallelujah. Is it possible my blogging helped bring this about? Sure wouldn't rule it out. If our own Morris newspaper would do something dynamic on its website, it wouldn't matter. In the absence of that, or in the absence of the kmrs-kkok site helping out, we look (hopefully) to the West Central Tribune.
The radio station site has basically crashed for sports since Brett Miller left. Heads should roll out there but probably won't. Morris tends to be an apathetic town.
The Tigers beat the Dragons of Litchfield 58-43 at Tiger Center. We're 1-1 now. Thanks to the WC Trib for reporting that our Addison Cihak made three 3-pointers. She was complemented by Leah Berlinger who made two. Berlinger finished with 13 points and Cihak had nine. But leading the way in scoring was one of the Fehr girls. You can't tell the Fehrs without a program I guess.
So it was Mylie Fehr leading the charge with 14 points. Maddie Fehr scored seven and Chloe Fehr five. This performance was more than "fair!"
I'm proud to note that Addison Cihak is my next-door neighbor up on Northridge Drive.
Samantha Konz added four points and these Tigers had two: Ryla Koehler, Hana Schutz and Morgan Harstad. Morgan is an occasional weekend server for me at DeToy's Restaurant. She steps into the shoes vacated by her older sister Kaylee. The girls have height as an attribute. I encouraged Kaylee to keep playing hoops in college but it sounded doubtful that she would. I should talk to her again around Christmas.
Only one Litchfield Dragon scored in double figures: Isla Dille with 14 points. Here's the rest of their list: Kelsey Palmer 9, Grace Holmgren 8, Anna Sorgatz 6, Kierra Lease 4 and Emma Knudsen 2. Dille was a sharpshooter from 3-point range with four makes. Holmgren and Palmer each made one.
The Tigers led 32-24 at halftime.
Heads-up: Band director Wanda Dagen's birthday falls right on Thanksgiving this year, November 28.

UMM women win
Nice to report the first season win by Cougars of women's hoops. So it was an 88-39 score, pretty satisfying. Noting all this, my immediate response is "who did we play?" Well I'm sorry but it's my nature to be rather glass-half-empty sometimes. Skeptics help us all stay honest.
To be positive, let me remind y'all of the era when UMM played all of the "name" state universities. I'd go to P.E. Center to see UMM vs. Bemidji State and there would be Dave Holman of the public school faculty, there because he was a Bemidji alum. The Beavers! So I miss those days. I think the competition put much more of an imprimatur of legitimacy on the UMM programs.
But those days have faded. The leaders of the 'U' I guess don't want Morris out here on the prairie to compete at that level any more. So we play teams like Trinity Bible College. That's who our women beat. Trinity Bible College?
Reminds me of when I interviewed Mark Fohl at the time UMM was switching to the UMAC. Sitting in his office - kind of a "bunker" office with no windows to the outside - I asked him if there would be a problem with UMM being in a conference with such narrow religiously-affiliated schools, whereas UMM was the epitome of secular.
Fohl could have said "Brian, I don't know what you're talking about." But no, he knew exactly what I meant. So he answered and the following is a very close paraphrase: "If we all just stick to the business of athletics we'll be fine."
Trinity Bible College may be one-up on us for getting into heaven but their girls basketball is mediocre, n'est-ce pas? I still miss the likes of Moorhead State, Winona State et al. coming here.
The U of M central office would have the power to make us stronger again if it wanted to. Legend has it the reason why the MIAC would never let UMM in, is that they feared how dominant we could become because we had the resources of the U behind us!
UMM football of the 1970s was out of this world!
