"Call it a crisis of faith," writer Shelby Talcott asserts. What is she talking about? The writer for "semafor" is observing how evangelical leaders are cooling on Donald Trump. But it has taken so long. And is this withdrawal real, genuine?
Is it done with a wink, the idea being to wait in the wings until they can strut out for Trump again? I am suspicious of this split.
Trump certainly does and says so many things that are disgusting. Perhaps the evangelical crowd just wants to lay low for a while? Surely they appreciate Trump's Supreme Court justices, don't they?
Talcott suggests that the apparent retreat is not even due to moral/philosophical considerations. Evangelicals should always be motivated by such considerations, but that is only in theory. In practice the evangelicals have the most primal motive: they want to win. So maybe they just sense Trump isn't a winner any more.
Is America really all about winning? The top official with "Family Leader" says the pertinent question is: "Who can win in 2024?" Thanks for answering my question, Mr. Vander Plaats. This individual was quoted saying he'd had many conversations with conservatives who "really like the former president."
Why would such reverential people really like the former president? They sure do not speak for me. I am an ELCA Lutheran. We are probably not even considered Christian by the 'Family Leader" types.
So I am moved to share some feelings with verse on this, well, conundrum of the faith. This poetry coincides with Christmas or 2022.
Christmas makes me remember the times when Christians could put aside any political schisms and just feel the universality of joy and the faith. Can we ever return to this? Do we have to listen to Ted Cruz? So we have to respect people who say "let's go Brandon?"
From the Arizona Republic today: "Arizona Republicans silent on Donald Trump's plan to become our king."
Jesus Christ was of course "king of kings"
"Ruminations Of Faith"
by Brian Williams
We heard all the carols in church
A time of year when we were pure
When no one was left or was right
We chose to keep that out of sight
Of course we had contrasting views
We're human and that's what we do
But somehow we all found our space
To love all our neighbors just great
So that was the best time of year
When everyone joined in good cheer
When politics faded from view
And we knew the right things to do
But now we're distracted by Trump
A bad dream that seems never done
We would not have seen this erupt
If Christians had not propped him up
It boggles the mind at its core
To see such a monster come forth
Who uses the f-bomb in quotes
Why shouldn't more Christians take note?
I'm asking these questions all day
The issues will not go away
The calendar turns and it's clear
The guy will remain in our ears
He told us if we would use bleach
Then covid might be out of reach
And Russia was all just a hoax
The truth from him cannot be coaxed
So Christmas is dawning once more
And Jesus is what it's all for
He was in a stable at birth
Amenities, there was a dearth
Today there is something amiss
Such politics into the mix
Our churches got caught in the wake
So many were taking the bait
A charlatan captured the faith
He rode it to go all the way
To president of our great land
It's hard to believe we were had
If Christ were alive here and now
He'd set us all straight clear and loud
The orange man is not our friend
To vote for him is a dead end
In Florida he sits and stews
He stirs up the hatred for Jews
He wants his own race to be tops
A Christian should tell him to stop
December is time to reflect
On how our religion is set
We ought to say "MAGA be damned"
You practice enough and you can
Do not be misled by Fox News
Ignore all their asinine views
And Newsmax is just a big dump
You don't need me telling you such
You don't need to read all this text
I trust you can see all the best
So filter out all of the bull
And please try to be glass-half-full
If we can't be hopeful and bright
When we have our focus on Christ
Then maybe we should step aside
And join up with MAGA in stride
So just go and join up in league
To further Trump's odious deeds
A coup was attempted, you know
If that's what you want you can go
So leave us alone who can see
That church is a place to believe
In things that are right by The Book
We won't be misled by some crook
It would be a miracle true
To see him repent through and through
It comes from our wildest dreams
Is it so absurd as it seems?
Just think of a classic of yore
So read Charles Dickens once more
A man at the end saw the light
There is always hope within sight
So try to imagine it all
If Donald Trump answers the call
If ghosts in the night get him straight
He still has a chance to be great
Just think of our Christmases past
It should all still be in our grasp
Our brotherhood was number one
The cherished words "Thy will be done"
We heard all the carols in church
A time of year when we were pure
When no one was left or was right
We chose to keep that out of sight
